Volubilis in Morocco

Destination

Volubilis

Roman ruins in the olive hills, usually paired with Meknes on a day from Fes.

Volubilis is a Roman city in pieces: mosaics under the sky, a basilica outline, storks on broken columns. It sits among olive groves, not in a museum hall. A local site guide for an hour is worth more than wandering without names.

Most private days from Fes add Meknes — the imperial city of Moulay Ismail — and sometimes Moulay Idriss on the hill. Do not try to “do” all three as if they were adjacent rooms.

Entrance tickets are paid on the spot. Wear a hat. The stones hold heat.
