Fes → Middle Atlas → Midelt
Approx. driving time: Approx. 200 km / 4 hours with forest stops
A gentler first day for travelers who do not want to reach the Sahara in one push. After leaving Fes you spend the morning in the cedar forests around Ifrane and Azrou, with time to walk a short forest path and visit the highland market if it is a souk day.
The afternoon is a scenic drive across the plateau to Midelt, a quiet agricultural town at the foot of Jebel Ayachi. The light here is wide and pale. Overnight in a simple, comfortable hotel, with an optional short walk among apple orchards before dinner. Tomorrow you continue down the Ziz to Merzouga with energy left for the dunes.
