Camel trek toward the Zagora dunes at sunset

2 Days Marrakech to Zagora Desert Tour

2 Days / 1 Night Starts Marrakech Ends Marrakech Private Tour Easy–Moderate

Experience the journey with local hosts

If you have one spare night in Marrakech and a wish to sleep in the desert, Zagora is the honest answer. The dunes at Tinfo are smaller than Erg Chebbi, the drive is long but doable, and you still cross the High Atlas and walk Ait Ben Haddou.

This private tour suits couples, families with older children, and anyone who would rather have a real camp night than a daydream about Merzouga they cannot reach. Travel dates, camp style and whether you ride a camel or take a 4x4 are all adjustable.

You will spend the first afternoon among kasbahs and palms, then watch the sun drop behind low dunes. The second day returns through the Draa and over Tizi n'Tichka in time for a Marrakech evening.

Itinerary

Day1

Marrakech → High Atlas → Ait Ben Haddou → Draa Valley → Zagora

Approx. driving time: Approx. 370 km / 8 hours with stops

This shorter Sahara route is ideal when you have two days and still want dunes, even if they are smaller than Erg Chebbi. After pickup in Marrakech you cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka road, with coffee stops above the switchbacks. The landscape changes from walnut groves to bare rock in a single morning.

Ait Ben Haddou is the cultural highlight of the day. You walk the ksar with time to understand how these fortified villages stored grain, housed extended families and guarded the caravan road. Lunch is usually in Ouarzazate or just beyond, after which the road follows the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest river palmeraie — south toward Zagora.

Palm groves, kasbah silhouettes and the first sense of true desert air arrive in the late afternoon. From Zagora a short transfer takes you toward the Tinfo dunes for a camel ride at sunset and dinner in a desert camp. The stars here, away from city light, are the reason many travelers choose even a brief Sahara night.

Day2

Zagora / Tinfo → Draa Valley → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech

Approx. driving time: Approx. 370 km / 8–9 hours with stops

Sunrise on the smaller Zagora dunes is quieter than Erg Chebbi and still worth the early alarm. After breakfast you follow the Draa palmeraie north — kasbahs, palms, and the long river oasis that once carried caravans toward Timbuktu’s memory.

Ait Ben Haddou can be a second look or a first proper walk if yesterday was only a pause. Then the High Atlas: Tizi n’Tichka, lunch in the mountains, and the descent toward Marrakech. The day is long but the scenery changes often enough that it does not feel like the same window.

Arrival is usually late afternoon. We drop you at your riad or, if you have a night flight, at the airport with time to spare. This closes a compact two-day Sahara trip honestly: you have slept in the desert, crossed the Atlas twice, and seen a UNESCO ksar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour private?

Yes. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver. Dates, pace and stops are yours — we do not combine you with other bookings.

Can we customize this itinerary?

Yes. Nights, hotel category, camel versus 4x4, extra cities and slower driving days can all be rewritten before you book. This outline is a starting point.

Is the camel trek required?

No. The usual sunset ride into Erg Chebbi lasts about 45–90 minutes at walking pace. You may take a 4x4 to camp instead — say so when you inquire.

What should we pack for the desert nights?

Layers, closed shoes, a scarf for wind, sunscreen and a small torch. Camps provide blankets. Duffels move more kindly than hard suitcases. Nights can be cold even after hot afternoons.

How difficult is the mountain walking?

Village paths are optional and paced to the group. This is not a Toubkal summit day unless you ask for a trekking outline. Tell us about knees and we will keep the walk on gentler tracks.
