Strait of Gibraltar from Tangier on a northern Morocco tour

4 Days Northern Morocco Tour

4 Days / 3 Nights Starts Tangier Ends Fes Private Tour Easy–Moderate

Experience the journey with local hosts

Northern Morocco has its own climate and history, closer to Andalusia than to the Sahara. Four days lets Tangier be more than a transfer and Chefchaouen more than a photo stop.

Finish in Fes ready for the desert if you have more time.

Itinerary

Day1

Tangier: Kasbah, Strait & café culture

Approx. driving time: City and capes

Tangier has always been a hinge between continents. A private day here can include the medina and Kasbah, the cave of Hercules, Cap Spartel, and a walk along the new waterfront. The old international zone still shows in the architecture and in a certain café languor.

We keep the day flexible around ferry and flight times. Many guests want one good lunch with a view of Spain on a clear day, then time in the Petit Socco. It is not a city to over-schedule; it is a city to arrive in.

Day2

Northern coast: Asilah or Tetouan

Approx. driving time: From Tangier, 40–60 km

Asilah is a white-and-blue Atlantic town with Portuguese ramparts, murals, and a pace that makes Tangier feel busy. In summer the medina hosts an art festival; year-round it is a place to walk the walls and eat fish. Tetouan, inland toward the Rif, holds an Andalusian medina and craft schools that still teach zellige and leather as trades, not souvenirs.

We choose one, rarely both, unless you have a full extra day. Either makes a cultured half day when you have time in the north before turning toward Chefchaouen or Fes. Lunch is in a local restaurant, not a panoramic trap.

Tell us which mood you want: Atlantic whitewash or artisan medina. The driver will not mind; the roads are short.

Day3

Tangier → Cap Spartel → Chefchaouen

Approx. driving time: Approx. 120 km / 2.5 hours plus coastal stops

If your flight or ferry lands in the morning, we start with a condensed Tangier: the Kasbah museum terrace above the Strait, perhaps Café Hafa, and Cap Spartel where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. If you arrive later, we go more directly toward the Rif.

The road to Chefchaouen is green and winding, a contrast to the ochre south. You arrive with time to settle into a blue-walled riad and walk the medina before sunset. This first night in the mountains sets the tone for a northern Morocco journey that will later drop into imperial cities and, on longer tours, the Sahara.

Day4

Fes medina: artisans, tanneries & sacred city

Approx. driving time: Walking day in Fes el-Bali

Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free medieval city in the Arab world, and it rewards a local guide. After breakfast you enter through one of the great gates and move from the Andalusian quarter toward the Qarawiyyin mosque-university, the henna souk, and the Nejjarine woodworkers’ foundouk.

The Chouara tanneries are the most photographed scene in Fes: stone vats of white, brown and poppy-red dye, viewed from a terrace above. We time the visit so you are not rushed, and we skip aggressive shopping circuits unless you ask to see leather or carpet workshops. Lunch is in a restored palace or a simple medina restaurant, depending on your style.

Afternoon options include the Bou Inania madrasa, the pottery kilns of Fes Jdid, or simply getting lost — with your guide — in lanes that smell of cedar, cumin and wet wool. You return to the riad before dusk. Fes is intense; a private tour means you can step into a courtyard whenever the medina feels like too much.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tour private?

Yes. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver. Dates, pace and stops are yours — we do not combine you with other bookings.

Can we customize this itinerary?

Yes. Nights, hotel category, camel versus 4x4, extra cities and slower driving days can all be rewritten before you book. This outline is a starting point.

Is Chefchaouen better as a day trip or overnight?

Overnight. The blue medina is kinder in the evening when day-trip coaches have left. From Fes a day trip is possible; from Tangier an overnight is the default we recommend.
